Fire and Ice

Today we took a break from intense mapping and did some roadside geology. Brian called it "Fire and Ice", since the Owens Valley experienced both volcanism and glaciation. We drove all the way up to June Lake and Mono Lake, both which are reservoirs for LA. Mono Lake occupies an ancient caldera, showing the explosive history of the area.

Then we drove to Obsidian Dome, which was SUPER COOL. We got to explore the giant mass of obsidian and pumice, throwing rocks (not trundling*) and breaking up the glass. The trees were massive, too!

We then headed back south to see the hot springs, a barrel of the LA aqueduct, and huge deposits of the Bishop tuff (pyroclastic deposits).
